RCI February 2004 - Fastack delivers fast track production

Apollo Adhesives has developed a two-part polyurethane adhesive that has a quick-tack, fast-cure quality enabling clients to speed up production time.

Fastack, according to Apollo, is one of the first polyurethane adhesives to enable continual production lines for bonding panels in a variety of applications - and Knauf Insulation is making full use of its capabilities.

The Polyfoam division of Knauf Insulation first approached Apollo towards the end of 2002 to request assistance with a special project which required the bonding of two pieces of insulation for a composite panel.

The newly-developed Fastack was recommended.  It is applied using spray equipment.  The panel is then fed through a pinch roller and the adhesive cures.  As a result Polyfoam was able to produce the composite panel from its own premises, keeping costs down.

Fastack was originally launched by Apollo to counteract some of the problems that were caused by traditional polyurethane adhesives when used in the composite panel market.  Original polyurethane adhesives had two issues for manufacturers.

The first was environmental: up to 50 percent of the adhesive contained organic solvent, which was released into the atmosphere during applications.

The second was that once the adhesive was applied to the panels, they had to be compressed for up to two hours while the adhesive cured.
